ART DECO TRUST EVENT

In February 1985, a group of heritage advocates united to promote the new “Take a Walk Through Art Deco Napier” leaflet, funded by the Hawke’s Bay Museum, the Ministry of Works & Development, and Napier City Council. In July 1985, the same group premiered Peter Wells’ evocative documentary Newest City on the Globe, drawing 1,100 people for a walking tour and screening. Celebrated for its bold cinematography and poignant storytelling, the documentary captures Napier’s dramatic transformation following the 1931 earthquake. With sweeping visuals of sunlit facades and pastel-hued streetscapes, the documentary is as much a tribute to architecture as it is to resilience. The film’s strong public reception helped rouse efforts to protect this built heritage and ultimately inspired the formation of the Art Deco Trust and its enduring programme of walks and tours. Join us to celebrate this visionary documentary with a special screening and Q&A session hosted by the Art Deco Trust.
