Louis Hay’s architecture left a distinctive mark on Napier, embracing international innovations, particularly American Frank Lloyd Wright’s modernist style. After the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake, Hay joined the newly formed Associated Architects and Napier Reconstruction Committees. Their challenge: to rebuild the town in a sympathetic, modern style. This walking tour explores Napier through the lens of one of its important architects.
