Before the Quake: Historic House & Walking Tour

ART DECO TRUST EVENT

Step back in time and discover the hidden stories of old Napier, before the landscape was forever changed by the 1931 earthquake. This guided tour begins with the early history of Mataruahou, the hill that once stood as an island and is now the heart of Napier. From there, you’ll take a short walk to historic Scinde Island House, exploring the rich and often turbulent story of Napier’s early township along the way. Built in 1867 by George Swan, the house is a rare time capsule. Swan’s photographs are among the earliest taken of Napier and its people, offering a vivid glimpse into life on the Island during the Victorian era. The story continues through to 1931, when the family living in the house fled to the beach in the chaotic hours following the devastating earthquake. Duration 1.5 hours.
